Mother and son. The apparent seriousness of the scene is belied by the fact that they were occupied with making whipped cream at the time. The mixing bowl can be seen reflected in the son's glasses.

An  iridescent cloud in the late afternoon sky of Austin, Texas. In their raw state, these photos didn't do justice to the true appearance of this colorful cloud, so their dynamic range has been optimized and the saturation increased  to make the color stand out properly. These pairs of photos show the same cloud first in context and then close-up. The two pairs were shot ten minutes apart.

In the first photo, a flock of cattle egrets (Bubulcus ibis) flies past the Tower, headed southeast, probably making for bird island in Town Lake. Days before, at sunset, it seemed as if every flock of cattle egrets in the city flew past my window, one after another after another, but there was too little light to capture the event. This time, there was just one flock, but they were early, and light was still relatively abundant. Even so, the photo isn't nearly as sharp as I'd like, suggesting that even a shutter speed of 1/500th is inadequate for birds in flight.

The second photo is the arrival of a similar flock at bird island, three years earlier.

A turtle in town lake near sunset, near bird island. And three of the ever-popular turtles that inhabit UT Austin's biology ponds.
